Fiona Wallace Ceramics is a small craft pottery in Tasmania's north west. Overshadowed by Mount Roland and with views to the Western Tiers, it is a place of peace and creativity.

I work in porcelain, stoneware and locally dug terracotta, experimenting with slip, sgraffito, layered glazes and ash glazes from local trees and other plant life.

A trip to Japan to work and learn in a pottery outside Nagoya in 2013 confirmed my love of simple thrown shapes. Although I admire and collect a great deal of decorated work I believe that the initial form created on the wheel is the most important thing, and decoration - while detailed - should accentuate the pot but not overshadow it.

I took up pottery (for the first time since my schooldays) in 2003. Within a week I was, in the words of Lucie Rie, lost to the wheel. Throwing took me a week to learn but will take a lifetime to explore in its many variations. I am grateful to the following potters/ceramic artists for their advice, teaching  and encouragement:

Alison Sandeman, West Dean

Peter Beard

Joanna Connell

Shozo Michikawa

Ian Gregory
